The Canary Islands Championship Naviera ARMAS Trophy was held this weekend in the bay of The Gran Canarian palms.
Indian sailor Nethra Kumanan, who competed in the open category, has won the Gold in the ILCA 6, where sailors from seven different nationalities including Canarians competed for this prestigious championship.
The regatta has been organized by the Real Club NĂ¡utico de Gran Canaria (RCNGC) by delegation of the Canarian Sailing Federation, with the collaboration of the Gran Canaria Island Sailing Federation and the sponsorship of Naviera ARMAS and the General Directorate of Sports of the Canary Islands Government.
The wind and sea conditions was very harsh - splendid for a sailing competition - and the 3 races scheduled were completed in almost all classes. Sailors had to brave winds up to 17 knots which put even the most seasoned sailors to the ultimate test.
Nethra Kumanan from India won the gold beating her closest rivals Martina Cacho an ace Spanish sailor and Cristina Pujol, Spanish Olympian, by winning two 1st and three 2nd positions in the fleet races ultimately winning the regatta have secured the lowest points.
Canary Islands is a favourite spot for sailors as it offers 20 deg climate almost through the year, even when rest of Europe is freezing in cold climate. Many European sailing teams across classes practice and train here particularly during winter. Any sailing event held here is always well attended by top notch sailors from across the globe.
